One version of playing tag that I deeply enjoyed as a child was Hide and Seek. As I was reading Glen E. Miller MD’s new book Living Thoughtfully, Dying Well , I was reminded of the countdown during hide and seek before the playmate who was "It" began to seek us out, and how our time on earth comes to an end after a countdown of days, the number of which we do not know.
In his book, Dr. Miller reveals how to make living toward the end of life productive and joyful. He does so by sharing stories from his own health crisis, his medical care of the dying, and his missionary work in India.
In my many years as a nurse, and especially the last eleven years as Faith Community (Parish) Nurse, I have been present for some spiritually beautiful "good” deaths where faith in Christ and His promise was strong, and for some where the suddenness left family unprepared and traumatized. Dr. Miller explains how to get life wishes in order --- materially, with family, and spiritually --- so we can live joyfully with hope to the end.
Dr. Miller will be visiting us at BVMC on Feb 24th to help us prepare for what is surely coming. More information about his visit can be found here.
